Per essere una release autoprodotta i ragazzi han realizzato un gran bel lavoro, sia dal punto di vista esecutivo dove Magnus Andre (basso, voce e synth) e Jarmo Nuutre (batteria, programming e voce) si gestiscono e coadiuvano egregiamente, sia per quanto riguarda il suono che pulito e bilanciato dona risalto soprattutto alle corde del basso che più e più volte incantano divenendo spesso e volentieri uno dei punti focali d’attrazione, merito anche questo che rimane in casa visto che della registrazione e del missaggio se n’è occupato lo stesso Andre.

Here’s another mighty slab of doom from Estonian 2-piece Talbot. This is their first full-length release, and it certainly shows they can keep up the doom for much longer than demonstrated on their previous Tundra EP (which I posted just over a year ago). I liked Tundra so much I bought the CD-R version off the band, which features remixes of 2 tracks not found on the download only version. EOS is even better than Tundra, plenty of monolithic heaviness and also some nice psychedelic interludes. Well worth a listen so go download it!

Our Southern neighour Estonia has been a bit on the losing side to Latvia on the topic of post metal music because of the excellent work of Tesa and SoundArcade. The duo from Tallinn, Talbot, is fighting back with a small line-up, but with a big sound.

My first touch to Talbot’s music was the EP Tundra about a year ago. The stoner rock it contained didn’t impress me much. On their new album EOS, the band has changed to a heavier gear. The doom riffs are crunchy and the growling low. There’s also some melodies and atmospheric stuff with a very personal sound.

Listening to Talbot, you wouldn’t believe it’s just two guys in the band – drums, bass, growling, clean vocals and synths and samplers filling up the sound. I haven’t seen them live or even seen live videos but – according to rumours – Talbot follows the model of Russian Circles, trying to bring all the album elements into their live sound without a backing track or additional musicians.

Co ale vím s poměrně velikou přesností (hraničící s naprostou jistotou) je fakt, že jsme se z východu dočkali milého překvapení v podobě debutního alba estonských TALBOT. Trošku nečekaná směsice sludge, stoner a drone doomu s psychedelickými prvky působí už na první přečtení jako poměrně zvláštní směs. A kdybych byl nenaznačil, že je to příjemný tah, člověk by si pod touto divnou škatulí mohl představit buďto něco vytříbeně šíleného, nebo naprostou slátaninu. Nadzvedněte tedy se mnou tu sukýnku, kterou jsem zmínil v úvodu a podívejme se do tajných krabic a skrýší této estonské dvojice. To je jedna z hlavních úloh basové linky, která efektivně nahrazuje práci hlavní kytary. Gradace i extrémní bolestnost tak získávají na hudební setrvačnosti, která donutí tóny ještě notnou chvíli vibrovat posluchačovou hlavou, aby se záhy vytratila do drone táhlých ploch s téměř halucinogenními samply a dalšími psycho kombinacemi. I tak poslech nepatří k tomu nejstravitelnějšímu – deska má sice jen zhruba čtyřicet tři minut, nicméně je třeba odhadnout tu pravou náladu a hlavně chuť k poslechu. Celá nahrávka mi většinu svých tajemství vydala teprve až po několikátém poslechu a pořád mám v této hudbě co hledat a co objevovat. Navíc se vše váže k příjemnému bonusu. Tím je jednoznačně možnost ochutnat nahrávku téměř okamžitě a to zcela legálně na myspace kapely, kde je zdarma ke stažení. Není třeba zdlouhavě vykládat, že první dlouhohrající počin této experimentální formace mne zaujal jak svou hrou, tak i příjemným feelingem a rozmachem. Přitom se zatím jedná o téměř neznámou skupinu z části světa, od níž by málokdo čekal hudbu tohoto rázu. Pokud vám něco výše zmíněný mix říká a působí na vás sympatickým dojmem, určitě by TALBOT neměli uniknout vašemu zraku. Osobně si myslím, že si tuto pozornost nyní i do budoucna zaslouží.

The songs on EOS, the debut longplayer from Estonia’s two-man Talbot ululate with the great howling echoes of a primeval, wounded lusus naturae, but also with the ethereal cries of something not-of-this-world. The album captures the very pitch-black essence of both light-year-eternal black-hole nothingness, but also two-hundred-leagues-deep earthen sludge.

At times vaguely reminiscent of great thud-bands-past like Fudge Tunnel (that is, if FT‘s records could be played at 16RPM), Talbot’s resiny bludgeon is tempered with a space-rock feel that almost recalls a slightly more malevolent Mogwai – in those brief moments when its not trying to club you down into the earth.

“Cayenne” is this great marrow-sucking behemoth, a seven-minute sonic horned beast that lives in deep, dark woods, probably the kind that grinds the bones of passersby to make its bread. While “Observer X” reeks of desolate lost-in-space malice, the kind of music Giger’s Alien would be fond of drippily stalking oh-so-lost prey to. But the pièce de résistance has to be “Combat Zen Speech”, a great yawning abyss of as above/so below; the song takes you on an otherworldly journey into the æether, then threatens to abandon you there.

Let me be the first to rejoice that EOS, for god’s sake, is an album – the kind of recording that desperately needs to be heard en su totalidad for it to have the intended effect, a lost art in these short-attention-span days of bands just slamming a bunch of tracks together and calling it an album, resulting in the listener just skipping to the next mp3 on shuffle. The shorter songs here act as necessary bridges between the epochal centerpiece tracks, so if you’re going to bother, you’d better be in it for the long haul.

Desperately trying to come up with something familiar to liken EOS to, I found the only simile that came close was the short film Powers of Ten. If you haven’t seen it, YouTube it sometime – it’s a film that depicts the relative scale of the Universe in factors of ten, by moving the view away from the Earth in increments of 10, first 10², then 10³, out to about the twenty-fourth power. But then the film reverses, taking the viewpoint back to the planet and into it – down to sub-micron-level. Listening to Talbot is like that – like having your body hurtled into farthest godforsaken space, and then having it violently sucked back in, smashed down into the Earth to molecular level. There is no other description I can provide that would do the album justice. EOS is vast in scope and not to be taken lightly.

This a great album made by Magnus Andre on bass guitar, keys and vocals and Jarmo Nuutre on drums, programming and vocals which makes up a doom duo from Estonia. Very original within the context of doom metal, they have created something that should appeal to many types of doom metal fans out there. From Electric Wizard sounds to Sleep, Om, Zoroaster to sounds normally found on albums by Moss, Minsk and Kodiak. They have a psychedelic, space rock edge to their music that sets them apart from a lot of other bands especially with the vocals that range from the clean which come from Andre and guttural growls made by drummer Jarmo Nuutre. The band has already completed some tours and played at some big festivals including Estonia’s biggest indie-festival “Plink-Plonk”. From the intro “Threshold” which leads nicely into the crushing “Cayenne”, the band have a extremely damaging sound for a duo but they are also very multi-dimensional. Check out the track “Observer X”, from space rock swirling sounds to some monolithic doom laden riffing, the song crosses over many heavy styles in its 8 minutes. The combination of melodic vocal styles and some grim, horror filled growls blends incredibly well adding to the other-worldly vibe of the track. Such originality is hard to find within the confines of a doom band so this makes this a unique doom metal experience. Songs flow into each other such as when “Observer X” moves into the title track, the change is hardly noticeable. In “Eos”, the band switches in a mood that could be compared to the band “Tool”, progressive, ambient and dramatic. Special mention must go to the bass playing which is excellent, always moving and becoming the main focus to a lot of their songs. “Combat Zen Speech” is a track that was released as a single and its also featured here, not surprising being such a monumental track. It builds from a throbbing bass line to a floating, ambient space, doom rock dirge providing a cosmic vibe. Driven by subtle but ever changing bass lines and rolling drum passages, it is the highpoint of the album. The last three minutes of the track feature some truly earth-shaking low notes but at the same time, the band doesn’t depend on simply down-tuning for heaviness sake. The heaviness comes from the moods created by the songs themselves so they unique from that point of view. “The Van Of Pleasant Living” has a Pink Floyd spaced out vibe at first before another sonic slab of thumping doom riffage is unleashed which leads into the final track “Coach”. This is one of the darkest, most apocalyptic tracks on the album and also one of the best cuts on this monster. It again has a spacey, cosmic vibe coming from the keys with growling vocals that sound haunting, menacing and slightly evil. There is great, swirling bass notes that gyrate the eardrums along with a middle section where the band hits the gas into a mid-tempo intensity, great stuff. For a DIY release, this is very professionally done, very well played and produced. There is also a strong emphasis on song craftsmanship so they have created something that can be listened to over and over again as you can hear something different each time you give it a spin. Its experimental but they don’t lose track of what makes a good piece of music, its spacey but without sounding like another Hawkwind/Pink Floyd copy cat band. Nothing is recycled here, its just a solid album from a what i know is a fairly underground band outside of their home. Ambient, experimental, psychedelic, doom, stoner, space rock and sludge all rolled into one seamless package, the album is available from their websites. I suggest everyone check them out.
